ACFT Alternate Events Calculator: Scoring for Soldiers on Profile
Not every Soldier can perform the traditional 2-Mile Run (2MR) due to permanent medical conditions. The US Army recognizes this through the Alternate Aerobic Assessment, allowing Soldiers on a permanent medical profile to substitute the run with one of four authorized events.
Our ACFT Alternate Events Calculator is designed to help you determine your passing status for the 5,000-meter row, 12,000-meter stationary bike, 1,000-meter swim, and the 2.5-mile walk based on the latest 2025 standards.
🏃 How Alternate Event Scoring Works
Unlike the six standard ACFT events, alternate aerobic events are scored on a Pass/Fail basis for the purpose of the 60-point minimum.
To Pass:
You must complete the event within the time allotted for your age and gender.
Point Value:
A "Pass" on an alternate event awards exactly 60 points toward your total ACFT score.
Promotion Points:
Because alternate events only award 60 points, Soldiers on profile are often at a disadvantage for promotion points compared to those who can score 100 on the 2-mile run. It is critical to maximize your scores in the other five events (MDL, SPT, HRP, SDC, and PLK) to stay competitive. Use our main ACFT calculator to optimize your scores in the standard events.
🔍 2025 Alternate Event Standards (Maximum Times)
Below are the maximum allowable times to achieve a "Pass" (60 points) in the 17–21 age bracket.
| Event | Distance | Male (17-21) | Female (17-21) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stationary Bike | 12,000m | 24:00 | 30:00 |
| Rowing Machine | 5,000m | 22:00 | 27:00 |
| Swimming | 1,000m | 25:00 | 28:00 |
| Walking | 2.5 Miles | 34:00 | 37:00 |
Note: Times vary significantly by age group. Use our calculator above for your specific age-adjusted standard.
🛠️ The Four Alternate Aerobic Events
1. 12,000-Meter Stationary Bike
The bike must be a standard stationary cycle with adjustable resistance. This is the most common alternate event for Soldiers with lower-extremity impact issues (shin splints, stress fractures).
Pro Tip:
Maintain a consistent RPM (80–90) and avoid "sprinting" early, which leads to premature lactic acid buildup in the quads.
2. 5,000-Meter Row
The Army typically utilizes the Concept2 Rower. This event is a full-body test that requires high muscular strength in the legs and back.
Pro Tip:
Your power comes from the leg drive, not the arms. Set the damper between 3 and 5 for the most efficient energy return.
3. 1,000-Meter Swim
The swim can be any stroke (freestyle, breaststroke, sidestroke). It is often chosen by Soldiers with back or spinal profiles.
Technicality:
You cannot use the bottom or the sides of the pool for momentum.
4. 2.5-Mile Walk
Often confused with the old APFT walk, the ACFT 2.5-mile walk is a test of brisk walking pace. You must maintain at least one foot on the ground at all times.
📋 Requirements for Taking Alternate Events
To take an alternate event, a Soldier must have a Permanent Profile (P2 or higher) documented in the Medical Readiness Portal (MODS/MEDPROS) and signed by a medical provider.
DA Form 3349:
Your physical profile must explicitly state which events you are "cleared" to perform and which you are "prohibited" from.
Training Period:
Once a profile is issued, the Soldier must be given a recovery and training period before being tested on the alternate event.
Recording the Score:
The ACFT grader will mark the event as "Pass" or "Fail" on the DA Form 705-TEST.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take an alternate event on a temporary profile?
No. According to Army Regulation, alternate events are generally only authorized for Soldiers with permanent profiles. Soldiers on temporary profiles usually wait until the profile expires to take the full 6-event ACFT. Note that with the upcoming AFT 2025 transition, alternate event standards may be adjusted for the new 5-event structure.
Can I score 100 points on the Row or Bike?
Currently, the Army standard for alternate events is Pass/Fail (60 points). There is no "scaled" scoring to earn 100 points like there is for the 2-Mile Run.
How do I calculate my total score with an alternate event?
Simply add the 60 points from your "Pass" to the points earned in the other 5 events. Example: MDL (80) + SPT (70) + HRP (90) + SDC (70) + PLK (80) + Bike (Pass/60) = 450 Total Score. Check our MOS standards guide to see if your total score meets the requirements for your specific job category.
